In Hyderabad, mercury touched 42 degrees celsius on Wednesday, the highest in this year, signaling advancement of summer, meteorological department officials said as dry winds have begun blowing over the state.

In the absence of any moisture, the harsh temperatures are likely to climb further and denizens are advised to take precautionary measures to face the summer for a scorching three months ahead, the officials said.

According to the met department, several districts in the state recorded above 40 degrees celsius in the state on Wednesday, including Anantapur, Visakhapatnam, Ramagundam, Tirupati, Nizamabad, Nellore and Kurnool.

Weathermen said temperature would further climb up to 41 degrees in the state capital on Thursday.

The sweltering heat forced people in the state capital to stay indoors most of the day. Major roads were deserted in the afternoon, while ice cream parlours and cool drink joints did brisk business.

“This is the highest temperature recorded so far this year and is an indicator that summer is advancing. People will have to gear up for the gradual rise in temperature,” said Narasimha Rao, assistant meteorologist, met department.

Animal welfare activists urged denizens to keep a bowl of fresh water in open spaces as its going to be equally harsh time for birds and animals living in the neighbourhood.

Many people in the streets, especially women were seen covering their faces with a scarf and carrying a bottle of water.

“Sunscreen, sunglasses and jackets are a must have for the Hyderabadi summer,” said Tarz Rabbani, a city student, adding that she avoids stepping out during the day unless it is absolutely necessary.

Mohua Mazumdar, a student of University of Hyderabad echoed her views, further saying that she resorts to drinking plenty of water and fruit juices to avoid dehydration.

Denizens, especially children who are on a long break from school owning to summer vacations are now queueing up for memberships at city swimming pools to cool off and sales of inverters, air coolers and air conditioners in the city have picked up as usual.
